At the Indigenous Engagement Institute, we are guided by Wolakota principles. Wolakota represents a central concept within Lakota culture, deeply rooted in the understanding of the interconnectedness of all life–as in, “all my relations”.
IEI principles include:
- Respect for the Earth and all living beings: Living in harmony with nature and recognizing the sacredness of the Earth and all its inhabitants.
- Living in balance: Maintaining balance in one’s life, including spiritual, physical, emotional, and mental aspects.
- Peace and nonviolence: Advocating for peaceful coexistence and resolving conflicts without violence, reflecting a deep respect for life.
- Community and kinship: Grounding in community, kinship, and the interconnectedness of all people and beings.
- Cultural and spiritual practices: Celebrating traditional ceremonies, rituals, and practices that connect individuals to their culture, spirituality, and the world around them.
These timeless Indigenous values are directed from Creation. We will always live these values, no matter how political regimes shift around the world. That’s what makes them so critical to understand as part of your Indigenous engagement. Plus, these values can serve as important waypoints for all of us, whether Indigenous or not.
As you think about visions and goals for 2025, ask yourself: how can you remain consistent with some of these Indigenous values within your own organization?
